“Give it up” Album & BAND IDENTITY Design

This was a fun one. The artist didn’t want to do a physical media release so we came up with the idea of offering a pack of four hand-printed coasters with a digital download card included.

The pack included two different colored band logo coasters as well as and album cover coaster and an album reverse with track list and credits.

"I came to Jordan with a very specific idea in mind for the album. He helped me work through this idea and ultimately showed that there was an even better idea that we should go for. I think what he came up with was even better than the original idea and was very professional in the way he steered us in the right direction."

For the band identity, I sketched up and a concept that I then worked with the band to refine. After finalizing the design, I carved linoleum blocks for use in the printing press.

Final copy for the album reverse was hand set with lead type and printed on coaster stock. Hand setting type was a whole new experience for me on this project and proved quite the challenge.

As for the printing of the final coaster set, I used my Kelsey tabletop printing press. I’ve had the press for a couple of years now. It has been an education in the old ways of printing for sure! With only a manual in hand I had to figure out through trial and error how to get effective prints with using packing and adjusting the press. Overall the artist was very satisfied in the final product and it was a super rewarding project to be a part of.
